Serhii Tokarev: STEM is FEM’s Contribution

STEM IS FEM is an educational project aimed at popularizing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) specialties among girls and young women in Ukraine. The project focused on different themes, including post-reconstruction of devastated Ukrainian cities. Serhii Tokarev, the IT entrepreneur and initiator of STEM is FEM, talked about the contribution of the project.

The Ukrainian educational project STEM IS FEM received 4,000 applications to participate in its activities in 2023. The most significant ones are mentioned below. The project implemented several launches like a course “Urbanism,” a podcast “Science: Women’s Voices” and a two-day module “Light Industry.” Serhii Tokarev shared more information on each project below.

 “Urbanism”—the four-month educational course

The main purpose of the project was to involve Ukrainian youth in urban planning and post-war reconstruction. The project team believes the collaborative work of citizens of different genders, ages, and experiences is a powerful approach to restoring the devastated Ukrainian cities.

“The team is actively working to ensure that as many citizens as possible gain knowledge about urban planning: understanding what our cities are like and what they can become, what aspects are worth preserving, and what needs improvement. With a significant task ahead in the post-war reconstruction of the country, it is crucial already now to engage the younger generation in restoring Ukrainian cities,” shares Tokarev.

According to Serhii Tokarev, 50 girls worked on the fundamentals of urban planning and architecture and developed projects to reconstruct public spaces in three war-torn Ukrainian cities: Ichnia, Trostyanets, and Okhtyrka. In April 2023, the participants presented their works and the top ten projects were refined by a team of experts and offered for further implementation. Moreover, three graduates were granted internships at Urban Reform NGO.

Series “Urbanism”

After completing the educational course, STEM is FEM has created an educational series “Urbanism” which was initiated by the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine. The series includes 17 episodes reflecting different topics and is available on Diia.Education. Serhii Tokarev mentioned topics like the study of cities and responsible citizenship, post-war reconstruction, the shaping of public spaces, inclusivity, and innovative construction projects.

“Light Industry”—the two-day educational module

Another theme the STEM and FEM project focused on is an educational module “Light Industry” conducted in collaboration with the women’s lingerie brand brabrabra.  About 30 participants listened to motivational speeches and insights from industry experts, studied the design and clothing production, and even created their lingerie collections.

“Science: Women’s Voices”—the podcast

STEM and FEM launched the podcast to highlight the contribution of women in science. Each episode is about female researchers’ professional and personal journeys.

The IT entrepreneur is convinced that it is vital to create a conducive tech environment for women. This allows for improving technological progress through diversity of experiences and perspectives.

Green Building Practices in Modern Residential Construction

Published

on

By

Sustainable construction is the practice of creating structures that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout their lifecycle. This approach is becoming increasingly integral to new construction projects, aligning closely with broader efforts to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability. Unlike traditional construction, which often prioritizes cost and speed over environmental concerns, sustainable construction strives to minimize negative impacts on both local and global ecosystems.

One key aspect of sustainable construction is the use of renewable resources that are more sustainable than typical building materials. This not only helps preserve the environment but often results in healthier living spaces. By implementing eco-friendly techniques and technologies, builders can significantly reduce a building’s environmental footprint. As the awareness of these benefits grows, there’s an increasing demand for homes that reflect these values.

The Benefits of Green Building

Green building offers a multitude of benefits, transcending mere environmental advantages to touch on economic and health aspects. For homeowners, one immediate benefit is lower operational costs. Energy-efficient appliances and insulation reduce energy consumption, leading to notable savings on utility bills over time. Additionally, green homes generally require less maintenance due to the higher quality of materials used, which are often more durable than standard choices.

The environmental benefits are equally compelling. Green buildings contribute to resource conservation and reduce pollution, supporting overall ecosystem health. Notably, these buildings often provide improved indoor environmental quality, which can actually enhance occupant health and productivity. Structures built with sustainability in mind typically draw better interest and command higher market prices, as they represent a long-term investment in the health of both the planet and its inhabitants. It is a goal that commercial construction companies strive to attain.

Key Materials and Techniques

At the core of green building are the sustainable materials and innovative techniques employed throughout the construction process. Reclaimed wood and bamboo are examples of renewable resources that provide excellent performance while lessening their negative environmental effects. These materials are chosen not just for their eco-friendliness but also for their ability to create aesthetically pleasing spaces. Recycled materials, like steel and glass, are increasingly popular, embodying both strength and sustainability.

Innovative construction techniques are equally vital. Prefabrication, for instance, reduces waste by precisely crafting building components off-site. This method not only minimizes material waste but also expedites the construction timeline. Similarly, passive solar design, which optimizes a building’s orientation and layout for natural climate control, reduces dependency on artificial heating and cooling systems. Resources such as Green Building Advisor provide valuable insights into the materials and methods leading the charge toward sustainable construction.

Energy Efficiency in Homes

Energy efficiency is not merely a component of green building; it is a core tenet. By integrating energy-efficient technologies and design features, homes can significantly reduce their energy consumption, greatly benefiting both the environment and the homeowners’ finances. Advanced insulation methods, high-performance windows, and reflective roofing materials all contribute to a home’s energy efficiency by maintaining more stable indoor temperatures.

Additionally, integrating renewable energy sources, like solar panels, enables homeowners to produce clean energy on their own, reducing dependency on conventional fossil fuels even more. Technologies such as heat pumps and energy management systems introduce smart, automated ways to monitor and control energy use. These implementations not only reduce monthly utility expenses but also provide long-term environmental benefits.

Water Conservation Strategies

As water becomes an increasingly scarce resource, green building initiatives are placing greater emphasis on water conservation strategies. Homes equipped with low-flow fixtures like faucets, showerheads, and toilets use considerably less water without sacrificing performance. Rainwater harvesting systems, which capture and store rainwater for non-potable uses like irrigation, further enhance a home’s water efficiency.

Outdoor landscaping also plays a role in water conservation. Techniques such as xeriscaping, which utilize drought-resistant plants and efficient irrigation systems, allow for attractive yet low-water-consumption gardens. Making a home water-wise can significantly reduce its ecological footprint, a topic thoroughly covered by the EPA WaterSense program, which offers guidelines and certification for water-efficient products and practices.

Case Studies of Successful Green Homes

Successful implementations of green building practices can be observed in various parts of the world, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of these concepts. A notable example is the “Sustainable House” in Sydney, which utilizes solar power and rainwater harvesting to operate independently from municipal services. Such designs are becoming benchmarks in sustainable construction.

In Boulder, Colorado, a community of net-zero energy homes targets complete energy self-sufficiency, using advanced insulation and solar panels to generate more energy than they consume. These case studies not only exemplify the feasibility of green building but also provide inspiration and a model for future projects.
