AMERICAN EVOLUTION™ commemorates the 400th anniversary of several key historical events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 that continue to influence America today. Featured events, programs, and legacy projects inspire local, national, and international engagement in the themes of democracy, diversity, and opportunity.
Hampton’s history with the skies and space accelerated in 1917 and this spirit of innovation continues today. Langley Research Center served as the headquarters for the first astronauts. The Virginia Air & Space Center (VASC) is the official visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center. VASC features interactive aviation exhibits spanning over 100 years of flight, more than 30 historic aircraft and a hands-on space gallery.
The center is home to the Apollo 12 Command Module that orbited the moon, a Mars meteorite, a moon rock brought back by the Apollo 17 mission, and the Lunar Excursion Module Simulator (LEMS).
