Dumbo’s waterfront arts district– world-class performance venues, premier art galleries, artist residency programs, public art & festivals.
Designed by renowned Japanese architect, Sou Fujimoto, Usagi combines an art gallery, library, café and retail all in one beautiful, light-filled, modern space. Embodying the clean, minimalist aesthetic that Japanese design is known for, Usagi is a peaceful and beautiful place to spend an hour or an afternoon enjoying art, lunch or coffee and the unique gifts available in the shop.
Given that it's many things in one, expect the unexpected, and don’t go in looking for an entirely traditional art experience.
Art exhibits range from photography, sculpture, interactive, installation, paintings, typography, and more. To give you an idea of how unusual their exhibitions can be, they once even had an exhibit that focused on the color white as a concept that inspires creativity and communication.
One of the crowning glories of Usagi is the shop. So, if you’re looking for a souvenir for yourself or someone else or just a pop of cool design in your home, this is the place to go. They have a beautifully curated selection of items that represent both modern design and traditional craftsmanship. You can find everything from Japanese bath & body products to magnetic bicycle lights to Japanese cypress mugs.
To round out your Usagi experience, head to the café for a cup of their famous matcha green tea from Ippodo, a 300-year-old Japanese tea company that produces the highest grade of green tea in Japan. In addition to their artful, painstakingly prepared teas and coffees, the Usagi café also offers Japanese fare like bento boxes, sushi and poke bowls. Keep in mind though that food and drink is on the pricier side, so if you’re looking for an affordable lunch, you might want to look elsewhere.
If you only have time for a few stops in Dumbo, Usagi should be one of them. The multi-use space is chock full of Instagram-worthy scenes and an authentic and artistic Japanese vibe that you won’t find anywhere else.
If you’re looking for a peaceful and beautiful environment to get a little work done in Brooklyn, Usagi is a great choice. The comfy seating, quiet atmosphere and plentiful caffeine sources make it ideal for focusing.
