Union Station was completed in 1925 and is currently Chicago's only intercity rail terminal. It's also the main terminal for all commuter trains in the city.
The design was initiated by Daniel Burnham, who died before the building was completed. Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White oversaw the project through completion. Union Station is the third busiest rail terminal in the US and handles approximately 120,000 passengers a day.
The main attraction is the stunning Great Hall. A 115-foot-tall barrel-vaulted skylight arches over the magnificent atrium, complete with marble staircases, long wooden benches and light fixtures and chandeliers ornately decorated with flowers, birds, bees, and butterflies that were all original elements of the station.
Union Station was designated a Chicago landmark in 2002 and has been designated one of America’s “Great Places” by the American Planning Association.
