In 1922, owner of the Chicago Tribune Robert "Colonel" McCormick held an international design contest offering the winner the construction contract for the newspaper's headquarters and $50,000 (over $700,000 now).

The contest attracted over 260 entries from 23 countries. New York architects John Howells and Raymond Hood entered the winning design and the Tribune Tower was completed in 1925.

A relief sculpture around the entrance depicts images of Robin Hood and a Howling Dog, a tribute to the names of the designers.

There are more than 140 fragments of significant places from around the world embedded in the facade, including the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid, Independence Hall, the World Trade Center, and, most recently (2015), Chicago’s Wrigley Field and US Cellular Field.
