Town Park and Community House

“Grand Lake Founders platted their village with a public park and gathering place at its center. Since the early 1900's, residents have held community feasts in the Town Park, first the annual fish fry that in 1944 evolved into the Buffalo Barbecue that still takes place every July. Residents used the Community House, built in 1922, for indoor and winter public gatherings, holiday celebrations, a movie theater, and even stage productions. The patchwork quilt is emblematic of community. Pioneer woman, at the mercy of stagecoach mail and package delivery, saved every scrap of fabric from old garments to stitch together patchwork quilts. In a village such as Grand Lake, women gathered at quilting bees to help complete each other's work. Quilting bees helped pass long frosty days and created social bonds for women. The women even began the Grand Lake Women's Club in 1912 to support each other and to beautify the community.” ‘Go Grand,’ Kristi Martens
