Nelson White, Mi’kmaq

"Traditionally known as 'water carriers', women take on role as protectors of water, and thiys piece features a female Elder in that role. Elders are also the ones who share their traditional knowledge and offer advice to what they could do to protect the waters in their communities."

Nelson White is a Mi’kmaq painter from Flat Bay, Newfoundland. Nelson exhibits frequently throughout Canada and the United States in both group and solo shows. His work can be found in several private and public collections in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba and Georgia. He was recently named the first Indigenous artist in residence at the Rooms, Newfoundland & Labrador’s Provincial Art Gallery. Nelson currently lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
