For an activity that everyone in the family will enjoy, head to the South Carolina Aquarium. This modern facility near the corner of Bay and Calhoun Streets is home to over 10,000 aquatic plants and animals. A three-story saltwater tank, a Touch Tank, an environmental learning center, an aviary, and a children’s play area are just some of the many exciting and educational exhibits at the aquarium.
Get excited about the exhibits:
With the opening of the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery exhibit, visitors can watch while the staff cares for sick and injured sea turtles in the aquarium’s hospital and recovery center. This one-of-a-kind experience helps to build awareness of the plight of these endangered creatures. Since 2000, the aquarium has returned more than 250 sea turtles to the ocean after nursing them back to health. Common illnesses and injuries to the turtles include debilitated turtle syndrome, shark bites, boat strikes, and exposure to cold temperatures.
Daily programs at the aquarium include talks, storytimes, and animal encounters and are included in the admission price. Want to feed the fish in the Great Ocean Tank or offer a stingray a snack? These limited experiences are available as an add-on to the admission fee.
You can also contribute to environmental projects with the South Carolina Aquarium Citizen Science App available for Apple and Android devices. By collecting data, you’ll help the scientists at the aquarium with their research on issues like invasive species, rising sea levels, and plastic pollution.
