Smith Eslick Cottage Camp

“Grace and Clyde Eslick built the Smith Eslick Cottage Camp from 1912 to 1915. Grace was a teacher, librarian, and Grand Lakes first town clerk. Clyde was a builder and a member of Grand Lakes first town council. Theirs was the first motor-hotel or motel with adjacent car parking in Grand Lake. It operated until the 1950s. Historians believe it may be one of the oldest original motels in the US. Owned and operated now by GLAHS, the motel museum discusses automobile tourism, an essential component of Grand County's economic development, even today. GLAHS restored the four original cabins, all connected with small carports between them, to their early purpose. The camp features historical motel furnishings in a park environment that recreates the authentic wooded setting. The unique educational experience also provides a picnic area, one that Cottage Camp guests of yore also enjoyed.” ‘Go Grand,’ Kristi Martens
