No major city is complete without a renowned art museum, and San Diego is no exception. The San Diego Museum of Art has a world-class collection of art from ancient to modern times. While known for its paintings by Spanish old masters, the museum also has a large body of American, Asian, European and Latin American artwork. Exhibits feature many different styles and periods such as German Expressionism and truly stunning American art. Where the museum really shines is how it tells the story of California through visual media. Some of its past exhibits include the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire, the African American experience in southern California and Women of the Southwest
The San Diego Museum of Art also houses a special collection of religious art from the Middle Ages and the Reformation period, telling the story of how many artists were sponsored by the church and the conflicts and opportunities created by the Protestant Reformation. Whether you are a history buff, a person of faith, or someone just interested in the paintings themselves, this exhibit will leave you in awe. Tickets are $15 dollars for adults with special rates for students. Members, however, are allowed in for free.
