Welcome to the Rusty Spurr Ranch. Your adventure starts NOW. The Rusty Spurr Ranch began in 2001 with the idea to deliver the most authentic and unique horseback riding experience in the Rocky Mountains. We wanted to share our passion for Western heritage, ranching, and 50-plus years of combined horsemanship with those who have always wanted to experience the cowboy way. Operating across 10,000 acres of undeveloped Colorado ranch country, we have found a unique way to share our stewardship of this land and the livestock that sustain us. It’s a mix of agri-tourism and a whole lot of fun when our guests join us in checking and moving cows or visiting historic ranch homesteads and learning about the value of horses, cattle and land in our ranching culture.
Our small ride sizes and NON-“Nose-To-Tail” rides ensure that our guests receive the personal attention they deserve to have a truly interactive horseback experience. Our remote location, conveniently accessed from scenic Highway 9, is a step back in time. You might encounter wildlife as you ride through forests of aspen and pine up 1,000 feet to the breathtaking mountaintops with scenic vistas in every direction. Returning through the fragrant, sage and flower-filled high plains meadows, look for the original pioneer cabins still partially standing today. We are currently offering 1, 2, and 3 hour Trail Rides and Private Rides. For an all-day adventure, try the Saddle and Paddle trip. This exciting experience allows our guests to enjoy two of Colorado’s most popular activities in one integrated package!
Check in at the Rusty Spurr Ranch headquarters for a beautiful two hour morning trail ride. After your included lunch, head over to the rafting office where you will meet your guide who will drive you to the put-in point and take you down the scenic Upper Colorado river for your half-day float trip. What better way to cool down and knock off the dust from the trail! And for those looking to do the ultimate in unique horseback riding activities, Get real with a cattle drive where YOU are actually doing the drive. Our guests take part in and actually help move the cattle herd on horseback with us, not watching us. We will coach you on working around the cattle safely and how to get them moved successfully. What makes this activity genuinely special is that its very nature allows beginner to advanced riders to ride to their individual ability levels. This is also a great Team Building event for businesses or reunions and a terrific opportunity for groups with mixed riding abilities! Talk about an amazing adventure across 10,000 acres!
