Right Proper Brewing Co. has two locations in the district: Shaw Brewpub & Kitchen and Brookland Production House & Tasting Room. Both locations take an innovative approach to yeast-forward craft brewing, producing artisanal ales and lagers in a casual, comfortable, old-world tavern.
Shaw Brewpub & Kitchen is located on 7th and T Streets, adjacent to the historic Howard Theatre. This location offers casual American eats with some Southern comfort food additions. An evolving house-made beer list accompanies the menu, making it a great neighborhood hang spot. Outside tables are shaded by umbrellas and inside seating is plentiful at the bar and hightop tables.
Dining at Shaw Brewpub means diving into “shareables”, like their cheese plate, Brussel sprouts with Thai peanut sauce, and warm pretzel bread. “Selfies” are entrees featuring a diverse spread of cuisines, including wood-grilled New York strip steak and sesame ginger tofu bowls. Right Proper believes that beer is good for the Soul. The five-barrel brewing system at the Shaw Brewpub allows the brewery to experience with small-batch, experimental recipes, thus, the tap list changes almost daily. Visitors get a cool view of the barrel room on the other side of the bar. Past favorites have included the Raised By Wolves, a juicy, hoppy, fruity medium-bodied pale ale, and From Here to Eternity, a nutty, caramel, cocoa brown ale made with an assortment of malts balanced by spicy Chinook, Nugget, and Cascade hops.
The Brookland Production House is located at 10th and Girard Streets. The tasting room features murals and a view into the production facility. Beers are available to taste, and growlers, bottles, and cans may be purchased at this location. At the Brookland Production House, guests can try a myriad of head brewer, Chris Percello’s, favorite brews. The twelve-tap tasting room consists of Right Proper’s classic, stainless fermented beers as well as the funkier oak fermented options.
Right Proper isn’t afraid to try new, bold things. For instance, the Baron Corvo Cuvee 2 is a barrel-aged Biere de Garden is an experimental brew aged for a year in bourbon, rum, and apple brandy barrels before being blended back together. Their White Bicycles is a rustic witbier that is herbal and light, brewed with black limes and Mandarina Bavaria hops, the house-mixed culture of wild yeasts and fermentation give it a lighter body than most wheat beers. Brewery tours are available at the Brookland Production House on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm, 4 pm, and 6 pm. No reservations are needed, but closed-toe shoes are required.
