Hi! I'm Claire an avid traveler and Digital Nomad. At 34 I sold all my worldly possessions that wouldn’t fit into 3 boxes or in my backpack and hit the road.

If you want to get a closer look at the Statue of Liberty without having to pay a lot of money and wait in a HUGE line, then you can ride the Staten Island Ferry for free!

It's a great way to see this iconic landmark from the water. Even though you won't get as close as you would on the official tour, you can still get some fantastic shots.

To ride the ferry you will need to get the subway to Whitehall Street. From here just make your way towards the water and you will see the station. The ride takes 25 minutes each way, you will need to exit the ferry and then walk around to get back on, unless you want to stay and explore Staten Island. The ferry actually operates 24/7 with boats leaving around every 15 to 20 minutes It has been free to ride the Staten Island Ferry since 1997, and it's a great experience you can have in NYC that won't hurt your bank balance!
