Retrograde Coffee is one of East Nashville’s newest gathering spots. Its modern ambiance and open floorplan are perfect for both the poet and the professional, and patrons love the outlets at nearly every table. The famous minimalism of the decor also translates into a simple website and a back-to-basics menu.
This coffee shop is for the purists at heart. They do not serve a triple macchiato with a sprinkle of philosophy. Their customers value the true flavor of perfectly roasted beans, perhaps with a splatter of steamed milk. They keep their menu and their intentions simple-- to serve coffee and espresso beverages people who want a break in their day to quietly watch the pedestrians pass on the sidewalk, or to chat with friends or coworkers.
Word to the wise though. Parking could be a challenge. This part of town has evolved considerably in recent years, which brings both opportunities its share of challenges. Locals prefer to park in the back. If you are arriving in a car, go ahead and pass Retrograde on Dickerson, and turn right onto Eastmoreland. You’ll see a parking lot and a set of stairs which lead into the back of the building. It’s much easier than attempting street parking. If you feel adventurous, you can always take the MTA, and exit the stop either on the Douglas Ave or Eastmoreland block of Dickerson.
Retrograde Coffee also serves beer and wine, and gluten-free and gluten-full baked goods. Sometimes, you will discover special events such as brew bars and public cupping.
