You'll find this coffee shop and canteen-style restaurant tucked away in an empty corner of Downtown Las Vegas in the Fremont East District. Don't let this throw you off. Once inside, you'll discover the familiar glow and warmth of fresh coffee and an inviting atmosphere. PublicUs (pub-li-cus) is the brainchild of Kimo Akiona who is the co-founder. He wanted to create an oasis within the desert in Las Vegas, a place where the community could gather and allow him to give back to the community. Akiona is a transplant from Hawaii who became a gaming executive in Las Vegas. In this role, he traveled the world and saw what a great coffee shop could bring to create an amazing social atmosphere. He decided to create that experience in Las Vegas.
PublicUs offers a wide menu of both beautifully prepared classic coffee beverages as well as a list of specialty drinks and food prepared with great attention to detail. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the chimichurri steak and eggs are great (we've been told!) The prized dish on the menu is the Mahalo Special, which has eggs, spam, sausage, rice, and kimchi.
At PublicUs, you’ll be rewarded with expertly-pulled espresso, lattes frothed with house-made almond milk and macadamia paste, and—YOU GUESSED IT—avocado toast. This is a third wave coffee shop at its most stereotypical and delightful, right down to the reclaimed wood tables, live trees, and fanatical staff. Pro Tip: It’s worth trying a “Death Cream” just to say you did. It’s organic whole milk, Colombian cold brew, and organic, unrefined sugar shaken to a frenzy—PublicUs’s answer to a Frappuccino. Details: Monday-Saturday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday, 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
