Anyone who enjoys visiting interesting bookstores will be captivated by Prospero’s Books & Media. The shop sits in a historic and large three-story building. The place is a book lover’s dream. In fact, many locals consider it to be the best bookstore in Missouri.
The short clip below offers an inside look at the iconic book store:
Peruse the aisles while searching for a unique book or vintage piece of media from times long gone. Throughout the book store and amongst the towers of perfectly stacked books, there are many little nooks and crannies to explore. There's also a cafe on the third floor.
Plan on spending at least an hour browsing through the vast collection of interesting material, which features many hard-to-find editions.
The historic 1890s building is, by itself, an exceptional piece of history. For about 20 years, the building operated as a grocery store. Upon closing, it was converted to a hardware store that stayed in business for another 90 years. It wasn’t until 1997 that Prospero’s Books & Media took ownership of the property and began selling books and media, including VHS tapes, DVDs, and vintage albums.
Throughout the year, many special events are held at Prospero’s Books. Their Facebook page shares upcoming book readings, literary discussions, author visits, and live entertainment events. Prospero's is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
