Petra's Piano Bar, a Plaza Midwood establishment since 2009, started with the piano bar and cabaret concept which was focused on drawing in the gay and lesbian crowd in order to create a safe space for them to enjoy the local nightlife. However, the new owners want to be sure all neighbors feel welcome despite their sexual orientation.
Since it opened, guests have been able to enjoy trivia on the second Tuesday of each month hosted by drag queen Lana Cane. In addition to drag trivia which the current owners have kept alive, they also host an event called Genderfusion which raises funds for Transcend Charlotte, an organization that supports transgender individuals affected by societal oppression. Petra's is known as a comfortable sofa-filled venue with a patio in the back coming off a small lounge area and a large lounge on the back with each area having its own personality.
They only book acts that play original material, with rare exceptions for tribute bands. Guests will not find jam bands, cover bands, commercial pop, metal, hardcore, smooth jazz, pop, or country music at Petra’s. Shows typically happen on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and occasionally Tuesdays. For all shows, doors open at 8 with the show starting at 9.
On Wednesdays, they host Songwriter Open Mic where solo performers are welcome to play up to 2 songs with a 10-minute maximum. Each open mic will have a featured songwriter who performs.
