The city of Charlotte has become known as the southeast region's center for LGBTQ events and many strides have been made to advocate and celebrate North Carolina's queer. In 2007, along with his business partners, Jerry Brown had the vision to create a safe space for the LGBTQ community in Charlotte. Petra's Piano Bar and Cabaret was born! Nowadays, simply known as Petra's, this venue has a little something for everyone.
In the early years, Petra's hosted events that were quirky and showy. It was indeed the place to live out loud! The club drew a faithful crowd of Charlotte's queer folks who came to sing, dance and express themselves freely. Along with live music that ran the gamut, there were drag queen hosted trivia nights and colorful cabaret shows. Everyone who entered the place knew they were amongst friends and felt free to be themselves. This was a fulfillment of Jerry's vision.
Since Jerry's untimely passing in 2016, the new owner, Perry Fowler has a new vision. Still, keeping with the bar's intent to be a safe space for Charlotte's LGBTQ community; Perry desired to be more inclusive. Perry played at Petra's with his band on a somewhat regular basis before ever becoming involved in running the club. He began by working the door and eventually gained Jerry's trust to become co-owner. Under the leadership of Perry and his partners, Petra's Bar has come to focus more on giving a voice to local talent of all backgrounds. Now Petra's clientele is a diverse mix of people for all different walks of life. There's still the same vibe of freedom to be one's self and the theme nights abound. Jerry's vision and the spirit of Petra's are thriving!
