Founded in 1930 by Pat Olivieri, Pat's King of Steaks began as a small hot-dog stand in the famous Italian Market in South Philadelphia. The sandwich shop claims to have invented the Philly cheesesteak - a much-debated topic. Now, the iconic establishment has grown into the most popular location to grab a cheesesteak in Philadelphia and is open 24/7. To add to its fame, Pat's King of Steaks has gotten high profile media press and has been seen on popular television shows and movies including Rocky, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Mad Men, Food Wars, Food Feuds, Rachel Ray and on the Food Network and Travel Channel.
There are only nine items on the menu and six of them are cheesesteaks. Some of the most notable offerings include the mushroom pepper steak, the pepper steak, the pizza steak, the steak, and the cheesesteak. Fries, fish cake, and the classic hot dog are also available for order. Due to the high volume of orders, Pat's King of Steaks has developed a system to improve efficiency and get orders out on time. Before you reach the front of the line, you should be ready to first say whether you want your steak with or without onions and then what type of cheese you prefer which includes plain, cheese whiz, provolone, or American. To further improve speed, they have two ordering windows, with steaks ordered at one window, and fries and drinks at another. And don't get stuck at the end trying to pay with your credit card. Pat's King of Steaks only accepts cash!
