Founded by UCF professor Stuart Omans in 1989, Orlando Shakes in partnership with UCF (Orlando Shakespeare Theater, Inc.) produces classic, contemporary plays. Orlando Shakes has provided ambitious, high-caliber productions like Nicholas Nickleby, Les Miserables, In the Heights, the original pronunciation Elizabethan production of Twelfth Night, and the Fire and Reign series history cycle. As a theatre company, their goal is to enrich the community with engaging professional theatre, inspiring educational experiences, and thought-provoking new plays.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Jim Helsinger and Managing Director Douglas Love-Ramos, Orlando Shakes has grown into one of the region’s most acclaimed professional theatres. They have garnered national recognition, such as rave reviews from The Wall Street Journal’s Terry Teachout: “outstanding…spectacular… Broadway worthy… a company that deserves to be far more widely known outside Florida.”
Education lies at the heart of Orlando Shakes. They offer immersive educational programming that serves Central Florida schools and the local community at large. Some of their programmings include Saturday classes, summer camps, school field trips, workshops, and internships. They are dedicated to educating the Orlando community as to the importance of the performing arts.
The theatre group continues to provide an innovative world-class theatrical experience to its guests while showcasing William Shakespeare’s legacy as the cornerstone of the company. You do not want to miss out on one of their stellar productions. Their 31st season offers a wide array of upcoming shows to see. Their selection includes a Signature Series, Children's Series, and a PlayFest. Each of these offers a unique experience, so whatever you are looking to find, you can see on stage at Orlando Shakes.
