Since 1916, the National Park Service has been entrusted with the care of our national parks. National Parks in New York City? Yes! There are 11 parks with a total of 23 different sites you can visit in all five boroughs and parts of New Jersey.
In 1862, this building became one of the six sub-treasuries. If you take a right, in the back corner you will see a glass door. Inside the door are the vaults that held assets of the US Treasury.
At this time seventy cents of every dollar in federal money flowed through New York City. Think of what that money would total today!
There is also a vault that displays a variety of goods from the mid-1800s,when the building served as a customs house. New Yorkers visiting Federal Hall during this time may even have seen a pirate waiting in line to pay customs for his "imports."
