In October 2014, the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development partnered with the Chicago Architecture Foundation and five teams led by Chicago civic groups and designers. Their charge was to develop proposals to “unlock the value" of the old Cook County hospital and consider its role within a larger long-term vision for the broader Illinois Medical District.

The Chicago Central Area Committee proposal shown here seeks to honor the legacy of old Cook County hospital as a widely recognized symbol of leadership in urban public health for nearly a century.

We envision a mixed-use campus that knits together all the anchor institutions in the current Medical District, connects to its adjacent neighborhoods and acts as a magnet for more economic development on the West Side based on the twin pillars of healthcare delivery and wellness, and post-secondary education and research.
