Dumbo’s waterfront arts district– world-class performance venues, premier art galleries, artist residency programs, public art & festivals.

Natchie is not an art gallery in the strictest terms, but it’s still all about art, and the overlap of media forms that results in something totally unique. Natchie is actually Nadia Ackermann, an Australian singer/songwriter with five pop albums and past appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, SNL, and The Today Show.

In 2012, Ackermann began to see her songs in the form of images and felt compelled to draw what she saw. In her Dumbo retail space, you can check out her artworks and purchase the drawings that include a free download of the song that each one portrays.

If you’re curious about her process, she says that the song comes first. She sits at her piano and writes the song, but she says that the image comes to her almost simultaneously. Once a song is complete, she draws one single image that encompasses the meaning of the song. And thus a song-image work of art is born. Nadia herself is almost always behind the counter and is famously friendly and enthusiastic, so don’t be afraid to say hello and get her firsthand account of what inspired her beautiful drawings.

Regardless of whether or not you love her music, her art has an almost universal appeal that can’t help but put a smile on your face. There’s a certain childlike feel to the drawings, which feature bright colors, crayon-like shading, and whimsical images. But it’s clearly done by a skilled artist and contains fascinating detail and imagery.

In addition to her song-inspired images, Natchie also has a variety of New York landmark drawings that feel almost like a children’s book in the making. If you’re on the hunt for a unique New York souvenir, one of these prints would be an excellent choice. They are also perfect for a kid’s room or any room in the house that needs a pop of color and fun.

Say what’s up to the resident cat, Adam Jones. And you just might be in luck and catch Nadia performing some live music while you’re there! She also does commissions if you're looking for a fun way to remember a trip or special moment.
