National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture

Introduction

Located in Humboldt Park, this museum is located in a historic Queen Anne style building that originally served as horse stables in the late-1800s. This museum is the only museum in the country specifically dedicated to Puerto Rican arts and cultural museum.

Exhibitions

The museum features many rotating exhibitions that feature art from and about the island of Puerto Rico. In November 2018, the museum will feature the following exhibitions:

Circa de la Aucencia: This is a theatrical exhibit by theatre group “Y no había luz.” that depicts images of circus acts and strange spectacles that spread though the gallery taking a visual socio-political perspective. A Vision of Reynaldo GuAracibo Rodriguez: A traveling/educational exhibition that explores the history of the BOMBA tradition seen in West African, the Caribbean and the Puerto Rican history on Chicago and others part of the United States. Caras/Faces: The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture is proud and honored to present a selection of paintings by Oscar López Rivera during his years in prison. Other Events and Attractions

Apart from rich cultural exhibits and a beautiful interior space, the museum also hosts events to continue to share Puerto Rican culture and heritage through festivals and events, such as the Barrio Arts Fest. This festival is over two days and features music on the lawn, panels with prominent Puerto Rican authors and artists, workshops and local food vendors. This festival is held on the July 14th/15th weekend to mark the reconstruction of the Humboldt Park stables and the opening of the museum.
