Have you ever wanted to play a live-action game of Monopoly? Head on over to Discovery Meadow in San Jose for your chance to become a real estate mogul as you make your way around the 930-square-foot game board. This popular attraction made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest permanent Monopoly board in the world. It also has the distinction of being the only officially licensed Monopoly game of its kind.
Learn more about this larger-than-life board game:
The game board was initially displayed at the 1992 San Francisco Garden & Landscape Show but later moved to San Jose, where it was permanently installed near the Children’s Discovery Museum in 2002. It opened to great fanfare and extensive media coverage on July 26th.
The granite board, with jumbo dice and built-to-scale houses and hotels, can be reserved for up to three hours at a time. With your reservation, you can choose a custom-built token, and you even get a striped prison uniform to wear if you end up in jail. Two volunteer referees and a banker from the not-for-profit community organization Friends of San Jose keep everyone honest and answer any questions you might have about the rules. Reservations must be made at least 30 days in advance through the online booking system and paid via PayPal.
