Modern Times is a little bit different. In fact, the brewery is named after a utopian community from the 1850s. Many of the beers are also named after utopian societies (real and fictitious). Modern Times likes to blur the lines between established beer categories to create their own concoctions. They offer a wide variety of beers including IPAs, stouts, and sours.
Modern Times prides itself on experimentation. They constantly test their creations at their restaurants and tasting rooms, so you're in for a unique experience.
Modern Times now has locations all across the western United States, including Los Angeles and Portland. The main location is in Point Loma, San Diego.
The Point Loma tasting room is 2,000 square feet and has 32 beers on tap. True to their nature, they often have some experimental pilot beers available. Perhaps you'd like to be a test subject?
Unlike many breweries (or foodservice establishments of any sort), you are allowed to bring your own food to the tasting room. You can even have food delivered to the brewery! If you bring your own growler (a large, 64-ounce jug made to be filled with beer), they'll top you off for just $6.
The Point Loma location also has a cafe that serves Modern Times label coffee. They offer coffee from around the world, including Colombia, Guatemala, and Tanzania. If you have a few too many pints the caffeine can get you back on track.
The Modern Times tasting room is open from 12–10pm most days, and it stays open until midnight on weekends. The cafe opens at 8am every day, closing at 3pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends.
