Whether you’re looking for a fun and adult-oriented way to celebrate the holiday season or you simply enjoy a novel cocktail experience, you’ll appreciate one of Atlanta’s newest holiday traditions: Miracle Bar, a Christmas-themed pop-up bar. The idea of a temporary bar with over-the-top holiday decorations and specialty cocktails began in New York and has quickly become popular in cities around the world, including Atlanta where it pops up in two locations.
Miracle Bar began in 2014 when a New York restaurateur who was in the process of building a new cocktail bar during the holiday season, decided to open it temporarily with a Christmas theme. In 2016, Big Citizen Restaurant Group brought the idea to Atlanta, temporarily converting their bar Tapa Tapa at 931 Monroe Dr. NE in Midtown to “Miracle on Monroe.” It was a huge hit, with two-to-four-hour waits to get in. Since 2017, they’ve offered a second location each year. Eric Simpkins of Big Citizen explains the concept in this news report from 2016:
Miracle Atlanta features about a dozen specialty cocktails, mixed drinks, and shots. The “Bad Santa” is a milk-based punch, served hot, with several types of rum, fruit juices, and spices. The festively named “Yippie Ki Yay Mother F***r!” features rum served cold with sweet potato and marshmallow flavors. If you need a quick and powerful infusion of Christmas spirit, try the “Naughty Shot,” made with bourbon and cinnamon.
