Maybelle Thatcher

623 Pecan St Helena

Helena Museum of Phillips County
Written By Helena Museum of Phillips County

There are two competing stories when it comes to Maybelle. One story has it that she is a wax mannequin donated by the Solomon Jewelry Store in 1931 to celebrate the museum’s opening. Another story contends Maybelle was a real woman who had the misfortune of watching her fiancé drown in the Mississippi on his boat. She was so grieved that she froze into her current visage, forever looking upon the river, hoping to see her beloved safely again. The Museum leaves it up to the visitor to decided which story is real.

Ghost or mannequin? You decide.
