If you're looking for some Southern flavor up in Milwaukee, look no further than Maxie's. Dishes here include those from Carolinas, Creole, and Cajun cuisine. The restaurant is located away from Restaurant Row and housed in a former butcher shop (Gerry O'Brien's European Meat Market.) The building is unrecognizable as a butcher shop. It's now dark red walls, back tables, and low hanging chandeliers. The menu is inspired by recipes from antique Southern cookbooks, though the fare is always evolving.
Classic main dishes here include the likes of Jambalaya, gumbo, Pecan crusted trout, and a crawfish po-boy. But it might be the sides and desserts that steal the show. The cornbread alone has earned its own fandom alongside sides like sweet potato fries with chive creme fraîche and classic rice and beans.
Leave room for dessert because you can't go wrong with the classics at Maxie's. Take your pick from banana chocolate coconut cream pie, key lime pie or the cinnamon bread pudding. Comfort food isn't complete without something sweet!
