Matt’s Bar & Grill has been a Minneapolis institution since 1954. Opened by Matt Bristol as a small neighborhood burger joint and bar, it would soon create one of Minneapolis's most famous food. The Jucy Lucy was created when a local customer asked for two hamburger patties with a slice of cheese in the middle. As legend has it the customer, upon being deluged with molten hot cheese exclaimed, "that’s one juicy Lucy" and a Minneapolis tradition was born.
Matt's Bar really is a neighborhood joint, many of the regulars sitting at the bar have been coming for decades and it is a great place to just grab a beer and watch a game. Of course, no trip to Matt's would be complete without a Jucy Lucy. Each one is handmade with the freshest, high-quality beef and filled with the molten hot cheese topped with grilled onions and pickles for a little tang. The Jucy Lucy is often imitated and it's important to note that if Jucy is spelled with an 'i' then you are eating a shameless imitation.
While the Jucy Lucy is the undeniable star of the show at Matt's, the fries make a great companion to the famous burger. Even former President Obama has enjoyed a Jucy Lucy at Matt's Bar and his table has a plaque commemorating the event. So grab a table at Matt's and soon you will be biting into Minneapolis's greatest culinary creation.
