If you’re looking for an intimate, get right up next to the performers, coffee house kind of nightspot—check out Mash near Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor. Located in the basement below Blue Tractor, Mash is an eclectic venue whose bar menu focuses heavily on creative whiskey and bourbon cocktails. Mash serves up snacks and sliders, and features live music almost every night starting at around 10 pm, with mostly local bands.
The crowd is generally made up of a range of college students, young professionals, and locals—with a slightly hip, younger vibe. Adding to its charm are the low ceilings and loose chalk strewn around, encouraging you to leave your mark on the walls.
Mash can get quite crowded, especially on the weekends, so get there early if you have your heart set on seeing a specific show. If you saunter in a little later, you may find yourself in a line of hopefuls waiting for someone to leave so you can be let in due to capacity restrictions. If you’re not looking to get up close and personal with everyone around you, you may want to stop in on a weekday when it’s less crowded.
There are a few tables, but Mash is mostly a standing room venue, so be sure to consider that when deciding which shoes to grab before you head out. If you are looking for a more comfortable, seated dining experience (sans music), you can always head up to Blue Tractor before the show.
