Marina City's unique postmodern design is easy to spot among its neighbors and has been an instantly recognizable Chicago landmark for decades.
Designed by Bertrand Goldberg, it opened its residential space in 1964 and cost $36 million to build.
Marina City was designed to be a self-contained city with apartments, restaurants, parking, a gym, a theater...
... and a marina, of course.
By offering all of these amenities in one place, Marina City was built to counteract the residential mass exodus to the suburbs in the 50s and 60s.
Many locals and visitors refer to Marina City's main towers as the Corncob Towers.
They were the first buildings in the country to be built using tower cranes, which are now used regularly in large construction projects.
