Digital Storytelling and Visitor Analytics for City and Cultural Institutions

There aren't many restaurants nowadays where you can slide into a seat at the bar to find your neighbor sitting next to you. As you exchange comments on the game with the regulars and the waitstaff, you feel instantly at home.

Mama J grew up one of fourteen children, helping her mother and grandmother prepare large family meals. Fifty years later, when Mama J's eldest son heard about the revitalization of Jackson ward, he wanted to give it the best gift he could: his mama's home cooking. Here more of Mama J's story in the video below.

At Mama's you'll find catfish and cornbread, fried chicken and candied yams.

Opened in 2009, Mama J's quickly became one of the most notable soul food restaurants in America, and made Thrillist's "50 Restaurants to Try Before You Die."

For the vegetarians, they've got a veggie burger. For the Virginians, they've got a catfish sandwich.

Don't skip dessert! Missing Mama's ooey-gooey strawberry chocolate cake would be like ordering a burger without fries: sure you'll save on the calories, but at what cost?

Mama J's could be described as an institution with southern and soul food, but it's best described by another word, a word that explains its 4.5 star rating after 1500+ reviews: beloved.
