Lake Point Tower was completed in 1968 and was designed by Schipporeit-Heinrich Associates. It is 70 stories high and has a modern style, based off a never-constructed Ludwig Mies van der Rohe design from the 1920s.
The three-lobe design helps deflect high winds as well as offer privacy to occupants; a proposed four-lobe design was rejected after builders realized residents would have a full view into their neighbors' living space. The disc on the roof is Cité, an upscale restaurant that serves steak and seafood.
It is the only residential building in the city located east of Lake Shore Drive. Its construction defied precedent set by Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago that envisioned no use of lakefront land for private enterprise — a 1972 city ordinance would eventually disallow such practice.
Lake Point Tower has one of the world's first elevated private parks. The 2.5-acre green space is only accessible from the third floor.
