Lafayette Letter

623 Pecan St Helena

This letter, written by Revolutionary War hero Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, is addressed to Andrew Govan, an ancestor of the local Govan family. Scribed during Lafayette’s 1825 tour of America, it appears to be part of a larger correspondence between the two that talks about slavery in the U.S. and how it compares to France, which had outlawed non-colonial slavery in 1315.
