While it did not originate in Detroit itself, the Michigan favorite the Jolly Pumpkin has become a favorite in the city after they opened a branch there. What makes the Jolly Pumpkin unique among the vast selection of breweries available today is twofold. The first is the beer itself. The beer is brewed according to more traditional methods. They offer many unpasteurized and unfiltered beers on their menu, evoking a sense of an era lost after the Industrial Age. If you want a taste of what your ancestors most likely enjoyed, this may be the closest you can find to it in the modern bustling city of Detroit. The other aspect that makes the Jolly Pumpkin unique is its owner, Ron Jeffries. In addition to his reputation as a master brewer, his ethos of searching for a slower-paced, more relaxed and enjoyable life, permeates everything the brewery is about and is the foundation for his operation.
In addition to its rustic beers, the Jolly Pumpkin also offers a variety of foods to pair with whatever beer you choose. These include burgers, pizza, appetizers such as chicken wings and seasonal hummus, and a kid’s menu. The Jolly Pumpkin has won awards both locally and nationwide for its unique take on beer, including being named one of Americas best beers by Men’s Journal in 2008. Detroit is a very interesting city to explore, but occasionally one needs a break from the constant change and noise of the city. When that happens, the Jolly Pumpkin is a perfect place to reconnect with the past before getting back out there. Check out the Jolly Pumpkin's menu and hours.
