Red dots and blocks on the map above provide an overview of the churches, large houses, meeting halls, and temporary sites of the Civil War Union hospitals that were located in Alexandria, VA, at various parts of the war. Alexandria's Archaeology Museum has excavated many sites of those that no longer exist and documented the history of those buildings that still stand in historic Old Town Alexandria. Much of what was found or found out is reported on the Museum’s website. (See DIG DEEPER! below.) Details of a selection of the most interesting buildings are provided in this Adventure, which could serve as the basis of a pleasant walking tour in our historic town. Enhance your tour with a stop at Alexandria's Archaeology Museum in the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The Museum offers exhibits on the Civil War, the recent discovery of four 18th century ships buried in the mud of the waterfront, and many other aspects of Alexandria's extraordinary past.
