Situated near the southeastern end of the celebrated city of Galena, Horseshoe Mound provides visitors with some of the most scenic views in northern Illinois. The stunning Horseshoe Mound is also referred to as the Horseshoe Mound Preserve and covers 40 acres of beautiful Illinois countryside. Tourists especially enjoy learning about the history of the mound and taking in the awe-inspiring landscape.
Many visitors to Galena have never heard of this attraction so don’t be surprised if you have it all to yourself. This fascinating and lesser-known place is a delightful way to appreciate nature. There are numerous signs positioned throughout the rolling hills that tell the history of the site.
Horseshoe Mound makes for an amazing viewpoint over the entire Galena River Valley. On clear days, visitors can see three states: Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. A visit here during sunset can be a brilliant way to kick off a romantic evening. One of the best ways to discover Horseshoe Mound is by walking the half-mile loop that makes it away around the lovely grounds. As you progress along the trail make sure to stop at the observation area. This is probably the best spot to take pictures and take in the remarkable views. Nearby, is the Council Ring, a collection of giant stones which have been made into a seating area. The massive pieces of rock have been aligned to acknowledge the seasonal solstices.
