Nancy Oakley, Mi'kmaq & Wampanoag

'The ocean: She is our mother, our nurturer. She is beautiful, full of strength, and holds our destiny within. Like all mothers, she acts strong for her children while secretly crying inside as her children slowly drain her life force. Will we allow our arrogance to take her life? At the bottom of the bowl, the Mi’kmaq hieroglyphic means “save me.”'

Nancy E. Oakley is of Mi’kmaq and Wampanoag descent. She resides in Nova Scotia, Canada. As an artist she creates culturally significant vessels that imbue her spiritual and traditional knowledge and honor her role as a mother. She creates her pieces in clay and finds inspiration in her traditions, nature, and the creation of life.
