AMERICAN EVOLUTION™ commemorates the 400th anniversary of several key historical events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 that continue to influence America today. Featured events, programs, and legacy projects inspire local, national, and international engagement in the themes of democracy, diversity, and opportunity.

An Enriching Experience for the Family

Hampton traces over 400 years of influence on our nation’s history. Fort Monroe National Monument plays a large part in this history as the origin and endpoint of slavery with the first recorded Africans to English North America in 1619, and the Contraband Decision during the Civil War in 1861. After the war, historic Hampton University was established to provide an education to newly-freed slaves and area Native Americans.
