The Greenhouse Theater Center is a co-producing theater company, performance venue, and Chicago's largest used theatrical bookstore. Our mission is to grow Chicago theatre. Located in the heart of Chicago's famed Lincoln Park neighborhood, the Greenhouse Theater Center is a mere 20 minutes from "the loop" and accessible by all forms of Chicago transit, including train, bus, and car.
Since its inception in 2008, the Greenhouse Theater Center has housed some of Chicago's most lauded commercial productions, including a run of Ike Holter's breakout "Hit the Wall," and the national tour of "Private Peaceful," which received a rare, four-star review from Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune. The Greenhouse Theater Center has also produced several critical and commercial hits, including "Machinal"—which was nominated for seven Jeff Awards including Best Production of a Play—as well as the Off-Broadway favorite "Churchill", which transferred to New World Stages in 2013.
As a performance venue, our complex offers two newly remodeled 190-seat main stage spaces, two 60-seat studio theaters, a newly created intimate 44-seat studio theatre, two high-capacity lobbies, and an in-house rehearsal room.
We strive to cultivate a fertile environment for local artists, from individual renters to our bevy of resident companies, and to develop and produce their work. Additionally, we house Chicago's largest used theatrical bookstore on our second floor, which holds hundreds of scripts, play collections, memoirs, and more.
