Grand Lake Yacht Club

“Wealthy families with ties to Europe summered at the lake and formed the Yacht Club in 1902. Ten years later they built the Club House and held the first regatta. In Denver that same year, club members hosted a lavish dinner to honor Sir Thompson Lipton, an Irish globetrotter and fellow yachtsman. In gratitude, Lipton shipped a three-foot-tall sterling silver trophy for the Grand Lake regatta competitions. Every summer, since 1912, the Grand Lake Yacht Club has hosted Regatta Week with sailors competing for trophies, including the Lipton Cup. Only a few yachts competed the first few years due to the difficulty of transporting sailboats on freight wagons over Berthoud Pass. The road then was a rutted muddy route to the Grand Lake turn off near Granby, where Laps Ish's transport services took over. Since its origins in 1912, the Grand Lake Regatta still is the highest altitude yacht race in the world. Sailing remains a favorite summer pastime on Grand Lake and Lake Granby.” ‘Go Grand,’ Kristi Martens
