South Carolina Historical Society Museum

Let's keep exploring! Our next stop isn't too far from the White Point Garden and has some exciting stories to share!

Charleston’s newest museum is housed in a national historic structure and features six galleries that showcase more than three hundred years of history. The exhibits tell the story of South Carolina through the society’s collection of artifacts, personal treasures, and handwritten accounts.

The Fireproof Building

The Fireproof Building is the nation's oldest fireproof structure. It was designed by architect Robert Mills, who also designed the Washington Monument.

Initially, the Fireproof building was designed to house the records and offices of Charleston County. The building is designed in the Greek Revival style with Doric columns on the outside. Fun fact: the building is actually made of brick and has been stuccoed to resemble stone. After extensive renovations, this building houses the exhibits and offices of South Carolina Historical Society.

Your Challenge

This architect who designed this building also designed something famous in Washington DC. What is it? Your answer will open your next mission.
