Maine's First Ship is dedicated to building and operating a reconstruction of Virginia, the first English ship built in North America in 1607.
Almost 400 years ago 120 English adventurers landed at the mouth of the Kennebec to build a settlement we know as the Popham Colony. It would be a short existence, lasting just over a year. The Popham colonists came to the New World with the intention of building a small vessel as part of their settlement efforts, bringing with them those shipbuilding materials that would not be available in their new wilderness home. They also brought an experienced shipwright, known to history simply as “one Digby of London”.
