From community garden landscaping to mural painting, the community of Forest Glen is continuing the tradition started by the early settlers who met for storytelling, quilting and other crafts. Vernacular and craftsmanship give the neighborhood its personality and character.
In 2014, the Forest Glen Community Club chose a design from Cyd Smillie of Arts Alive Chicago to be painted on the Metra wall at Elston and Forest Glen. It was chosen for its capacity to represent the community’s tradition of nature and gardening.
This mural is part of an initiative from the 39th and 45th wards to foster a stronger sense of safety and neighborhood pride by engaging community groups in working with local artists to beautify places that are heavily used by both pedestrians and automobile drivers.
