WE ❤️ DESIGN. Tours, exhibits, programs and events about Chicago architecture. Formerly the Chicago Architecture Foundation.
Fiction Fort is a playful and welcoming structure that houses a free book exchange in public spaces. The exterior “walls” are fashioned from elements that resemble open books and small gabled houses. And its overall design is a reference to Chicago’s only castle, the Givens Irish Castle located in the Chicago neighborhood of Beverly.
The structural framework provides a scaffold that offers a flowing, changing library of books to visitors. Fiction Fort invites interactivity through the physical engagement of taking and leaving a book and through the immersion of reading a story in and around the space.
When inside, the Fort’s scale makes readers feel too large, priming their imaginations for transport into literary realms.
