Federal Hill

Federal Hill is located south of Baltimore's central business district. The neighborhood is most reputable for its Federal Hill Historic District, which contains many structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Federal Hill is also home to a diverse collection of restaurants and shops, making it a great area to visit in Baltimore.

Early in history, Federal Hill was known as “Signal Hill” because it functioned as a maritime observatory for merchants over the Patapsco River. Following the civic celebration on the hill as a result of the ratification of the new “Federal” constitution of the United States, the hill itself was officially named “Federal Hill” in 1789.

When visiting Federal Hill, make sure to wander the Cross Street Market. Built in the 19th century, the Cross Street Market is still considered the primary social and commercial hub for Federal Hill locals. Shop for fresh meats, produce, flowers, and baked foods here!

Spend some time at Federal Hill’s museums. Start with the American Visionary Art Museum, a museum that specializes in the display and preservation of outsider art. Next, visit the Maryland Science Center and explore the three levels of exhibits, the planetarium, and the observatory.

Several times a year, Federal Hill hosts various street festivals. One of the neighborhood’s most popular festivals is the annual Shakespeare on the Hill, which hosts a series of summer performances in the park on top of the actual Federal Hill.
