Opened in 2013 by two high school friends with a passion for food and a dream, Fat Bao is one of the trendiest places to go in Houston for Asian-fusion cuisine. Locals all agree, the food is served fast, fresh, and always with a friendly smile. Common in Asian cuisine, a bao is a bun-like dumpling often filled with tasty meats and steamed vegetables. The owners of Fat Bao worked tirelessly to find the perfect combination of ingredients to use inside these tasty little buns. Today, there are over 15 different bao combinations. Many regulars enjoy trying new baos each time they visit. This is because the menu has numerous flavors to choose from—pork belly, panko-crusted fish, house-smoked salmon, tofu, and even fried chicken.
Fat Bao also offers a tasty selection of sides, or munchies as they're called here, each with its own unique flair. For example, there are fried cauliflower bites with curry spice, avocado chips with jalapeño dip or hand-cut fries served with parmesan rosemary sauce. However, take note, the fat onion rings with housemade togarashi "kimcheenaise" dip are always a fan favorite. Foodies on a budget will appreciate Fat Bao's lunch specials which are offered Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cover image via Flickr by lauren.topor (CC BY 2.0).
