The Taubman Museum of Art is part of the lively metro mountain mix of arts, culture and outdoor fun in the heart of downtown Roanoke, Virginia.

Art Venture

Art Venture is an innovative exploratory gallery for youth and families. Visitors to Art Venture can paint, draw, build, connect music with art, investigate 3D printing and printmaking, create sculptures, display artwork, and much more. This interactive hands-on learning environment includes continuously changing programming that engages children ages 12 months to 17 years and connects to our exhibitions and permanent collections. 14 Interactive Stations: Painting, Printmaking, Drawing, Sculpture, Music and Visual Art, Science, Architecture, Theatre, Pre-Toddler area, Giant Dry Erase Board, Color Wheel, 3D Printing, Older Student Stations, and Community Display Area. Stations have self-directed activities with curriculum connections and guiding questions to stimulate learning. ART VENTURE HOURS Wednesday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm Sunday: 12 - 5pm Closed Monday & Tuesday Costs: $5 per person, Children under 23 months free, Members free.

The Museum School

Whether you’re a budding creator or an accomplished artist, the Museum School at the Taubman Museum of Art is the perfect place to help you build your skills, learn new techniques, explore different media and become a more confident artist, all in a relaxed, no-pressure, “we’re-all-friends-here” kind of environment. Our faculty includes professional artists and educators whose knowledge and passion for art shine through. You’ll get individualized instruction in a small group setting, all with the Museum’s beautiful galleries as your backdrop. You’ll be able to draw inspiration from the works on view, take special trips into the galleries, and get behind-the-scenes access to processes that are beneficial to your art practices. So join us to experiment, learn, grow and—most importantly—have fun! You’re sure to enjoy the experience and love your new art-making skills. The Museum School offers classes for children from infants through teens, adult classes, and family classes.

Summer Camps

The Museum offers children's summer camps yearly. A total of nine weeks of camps are available for children ages 5-14. These camps run from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and are divided by age groups. Below is the 2019 schedule, please visit our website after the new year to look forward to 2020!

For ages 5-8 the 2019 camps are: Paint, Print, & Play- June 3-7 Paper Possibilities- June 24-28 Clay Creations- August 5-9
For ages 8-11 the 2019 camps are: Exploring Painting & Printmaking- June 10-14 Make it Fashion- July 15-19 Potter's Wheel & Hand-building- July 29-August 2
For ages 10-14 the 2019 camps are: Sculpture & Installation- June 17-21 The Art of Bookmaking- July 8-12 The World of Watercolor- July 22-26

This year the Museum is now offering Kids Night Out! Children ages 5-12 enjoy a special kids night out at the Taubman on every first Friday of the month! Parents drop off their little ones for three hours of art-making, galleries, and fun in Art Venture! Each month features a different art-making activity, a special visit into the galleries, and private Art Venture time, for Kids Night Out participants only! Bring your own dinner or reserve a boxed dinner from the Morning Brew Cafe kids menu. Drop off is 5-5:30pm Pick up is 8-8:30pm Members are $30; Visitors $35. Add-on a sibling for $15 each! Dinner is available from Morning Brew Cafe: place your $8 order for classic grilled cheese, ham & cheese, peanut butter & jelly, or corndog, with chips and juice included. Gluten-free options available.

The Taubman Museum of Art also offers "Arty Party" Birthday Parties which include 60 minutes in the classroom with guided activities, and 30 in Art Venture, our hands-on creativity center. In addition the Museum now offers Art Badge Lessons. Bring your Boy or Girl Scout troop to the Taubman Museum of Art and let us help you earn an art badge. Each 90 minute lesson includes a tour of the galleries and a hands-on projects led by the museum staff to fit the requirements of the badge.
