When you think of art what immediately comes to mind? Most likely sterile museums populated by the work of well established and instantly recognizable masters. While there is nothing that quite compares to seeing the work of these giants in the art world in person, this is ultimately an extremely limiting definition of art and what it can mean. If you are looking for something new to share with family and friends, consider visiting the murals in Detroit’s East Market. In this unique creative space, local artists have painted stunning murals to express themselves and to send a positive message to the local community about the power of art to transform the self and society.
While it is primarily driven by local artists and initiatives, the murals in the Eastern Market have attracted attention nationwide. The annual festival dedicated to these pieces, “Murals in the Market” was named one of the best mural festivals in the world by Smithsonian Magazine. This tradition is an opportunity to see the artists in action as they create their works as well as see lectures on the history of the murals and what they mean to Detroit’s unique culture. If you want to see local talent on display, this is the place to see it.
